So…What is a Copywriter, anyway?

I often dread this question. “So, what do you do?”. 

My mind races to different corners…I am tempted to say, “I am the mistress of all written words and slayer of Lorem Ipsums, chief mind reader and marketing superhero”. 

But I just stick to saying I am a copywriter. With a “W”. Because Copyrighting is a completely different beast. But thanks to the quirks of the English language, they both sound the same and I often have to clarify it as my response is usually met with a blank stare.

 “Oh, ok. A Copywriter, you say?” 

(brace for impact in 3…2…1..)

“So what does a copywriter do, exactly?”

(BOOM. I knew it was coming.)

Ok, here we go. A Copywriter…with a W…is the person who skillfully strings together marketing messages that make people take action. They are the person who takes time to understand the target audience down to their shoe size number and dives deep to learn what keeps them awake at night. A Copywriter is the unsung hero of something we call direct-response marketing. The quiet genius behind every sales letter, landing page, Facebook ad copy, sales video script, website and print ads you have ever been exposed to.

A Copywriter enters conversations already going on in the target audience’s mind and expertly uses words to build a connection with the reader, position the client’s product as the ultimate solution and persuade the reader to pull out their credit card and make a purchase. Copywriting is a science with a touch of art, and it takes a special person to combine words into the right alchemy that propels a reader to say YES and take action. (Writing copy is easy. Writing BAD copy is even easier. But a single piece of GOOD copy can make your business hundreds of thousands of dollars.)

Copywriting is the lifeblood of any marketing strategy. Get your messaging wrong, and you can waste your hard earned ad dollars and get crickets. A good copywriter is obsessed with finding the right words that will resonate with your audience and drive business results. 

So, what do I do? I am a copywriter. Kind of like Spiderman…big powers….big responsibilities. You get the idea…
